By adding to My Courses you can compare courses and create a personalised prospectus.

This course provides a broad, multidisciplinary study of sport development and coaching.

You learn how to plan and deliver sport to different groups and communities in the UK, while examining all levels of sport development, from foundation to excellence.

A key element of the course is your work placement, which provides you with valuable experience in preparation for your career in sport development or coaching.

Many placements are with our local and national partner organisations such as
• national sport governing bodies
• local authority sport development units
• professional football clubs
• school sport partnerships

Your final year involves you improving your business and enterprise skills in a sport development context. You form realistic sports consultancies competing to write a professional sports strategy in an outside organisation. Teamwork and leadership theory are key principles, which are tested with a series of team challenges.

Students on this degree can study media operations modules linked to volunteering placements at major events for example, The Commonwealth Games 2014. Initially these modules were developed in partnership with the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and students took part volunteering opportunities linked to the 2012 games.

To enhance your career prospects, we encourage you to take national governing body coaching awards and assist you in completing voluntary work in the local community. You are also required to attend the annual PESDC professional conference.

Previous students have taken part in projects such as running disability sports clubs, coaching programmes in primary schools and running large scale events in school sports partnerships. Relevant voluntary work may also count towards your final degree.

Your learning, in our first class facilities, involves taking part in • lectures • workshops • practical tasks • projects.

Our facilities include a recently refurbished sports hall and gymnasium together with access to Sheffield’s world class venues, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Don Valley Stadium and The English Institute of Sport.

There is also a full-time version of this course.
