MSc/PgDip/PgCert Sport Business Management, 2008 graduate
Why did you decide to study this course?
'The development of the sport market after the Beijing Olympics means that the industry in China is short of people who can relate sport to management skills. So this course could be very important to my future career and provide great opportunities.'
What has been one of the highlights for you so far?
'As part of the course, I helped Sheffield United Football Club with a survey to assess their fans’ brand knowledge of their main sponsor. It was a great opportunity for me to experience the UK football industry. Football in the UK is very well developed, not only because it’s the most popular sport in UK, but it’s very well known all over the world so it was great to get involved.'
What do you want to do when you graduate?
'I’d like to work in a sports venue and also organise and run the sport events. But I will never forget my dream, which is working for my favourite football team – Beijing Guoan Football Club.'
And have you been on any placements related to working in a sports venue?
'Yes, I worked in the events management team in Ponds Forge International Sport Centre for almost four months. I worked as a co-ordinator in the sports hall, one of the most diverse sport venues in Sheffield International Venues because it’s so flexible. I learnt lots of things about how to set up an event, how to organise and run an event and how to communicate to people to make sure they were satisfied with their experience.'

Why did you choose to come to study at Sheffield Hallam University?
'I live in Singapore and I am studying an MSc in Sport Business Management on the distance learning programme. There is a limited choice of sports related courses at masters level that you can study in Singapore. After I had done some research I found that Sheffield Hallam offered a course which was interesting, flexible and fitted in around my busy schedule.'
Why did you choose to study your course?
'I have always been interested in sport and business and wanted to study a course which was different to the MBAs offered in my home country. As this was a mid-career move for me I wanted to study a course that provided a qualification that could take me into the sports industry.'
What do you think about your course?
'The content is great, lots of real life cases for consideration and analysis. I appreciate being taught by industry practitioners and not just academics.'
What have you learned from your course?
'Applying critical thinking and analysis on case studies and assignments.'
What advantages does this course give you in terms of career progression and personal attributes?
'This course enabled me to learn things which are specific to the sports industry. I hope the qualification will open up the right opportunities for me to make a career switch.'

MSc Sport Business Management
'I decided to do my postgraduate study in the UK as I wanted to improve my English (speaking and writing in particular). Furthermore, I always wanted to experience the life in foreign country as an international student.
'I think doing the top-up degree in Hong Kong changed my learning style entirely as the course emphasizes critical thinking and independent learning. I learned some basic researching skills and some methodologies to improve my essay writing. In addition, tutors encouraged me to do extended reading to enrich my knowledge and expertise.
'Living in Sheffield as a university student is fun. I made plenty of friends including local and international students, people are nice and friendly. I also joined the local and university water polo team and competed over the year.
'I would say the most significant key skill I have gained over the year is the way of thinking. For instance, how to link up my own ideas with previous researches and how to compare and judge different arguments.
'I think the teaching facilities are really good at Sheffield Hallam, the Blackboard site is a very powerful tool which contains loads of resources for referencing. I found most of the information and reading material though the site when I worked on my assignment and dissertation. In terms of teaching, tutors provided a key text list prior to every semester so I can get well prepared before the module starts. With the preparation, I am able to discuss thorough issues with tutors on particular areas. I found this way of studying very effective.'

Sheffield Hallam students at London 2012

Sheffield Hallam has been involved in London 2012 in many different ways.
Our sport students study the only press operations modules in the world developed exclusively with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games organisers. As a result of the partnership, over 200 of our sport students have undertook work placements at Olympic Test Events, as part of the Torch Relay team or at the Games themselves.
Describing the initiative, LOCOG chief executive Paul Deighton said; 'This is the most significant partnership we have with any educational institution in the country by a long way'. It's fantastic for us because we get terrific people, who are highly motivated and well trained. And what better way for students to be entering the workforce and to be looking for a future career than to have had this kind of experience integrated into your education.
Matt Dixon, a sport development student who worked with the LOCOG press operations team, said: 'I really enjoyed working with LOCOG's press operations team. It was a completely new experience for me to work with such a high-profile organisation. I learned lots of skills from the team here, and it was incredible to be a part of London 2012 through my university course.'

Josh, trackside at the Olympics
Fellow student Shereen Hutton, who worked as a flash quote reporter at the Olympic stadium throughout the Games, said, 'I had such an amazing time, I loved every minute of it! The whole experience seemed to fly by and it felt surreal to me. I was speaking to sporting heroes like Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Usain Bolt on a daily basis, and I managed to get quotes from them even though I was quite star struck from being in their presence!'
Josh Saydraouten, who also worked trackside at the main stadium, added, ''Being a Games Maker at the London 2012 Olympic Games was a fantastic experience, and will be great for my CV. My personal highlight was when Sanya Richards Ross [winner of the women’s 400m and 4x400m relay gold for the USA] spoke to me in the broadcast zone'.
Sport and active lifestyles research
In addition to our sport courses, the university's Academy of Sport and Physical Activity is home to three internationally renowned sports research centres, producing world-class research in sport performance, economics and engineering. Our sports research is ranked fourth in the UK.
The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK. It focuses on physical activity, wellbeing and performance enhancement.
The centre worked closely with GB Volleyball and GB Table Tennis as they prepared for London 2012.
The Sport Industry Research Centre applies economic techniques to generate new knowledge and insight about the sport and leisure industries.
Recent projects have included measuring the impact of the 2012 Olympics on the UK's sporting economy as well as other major sporting events.
The Centre for Sports Engineering Research focuses on developing fundamental understanding of the complex sporting environment and the creation of new innovative technologies.
The Centre enjoys an international reputation and works with a wide range of government agencies, ruling bodies of sport, and commercial companies. Activities include applied research, R&D consultancy services, project management, public engagement and delivering our MSc Sports Engineering course.
The centre is one of only four University Innovation Partners to UK Sport, and provided technical support to a number of Olympic teams in the run-up to London 2012, including GB Boxing, GB Diving and British Cycling.
