This course is for people interested in developing an understanding of the sense of excitement and drama that surrounds sport. We provide you with the knowledge and expertise to follow a career in sport or go on to further academic study and research.

It is suitable if you have an interest in • sport • sociology • politics • psychology • cultural studies • the media.

In level one you study
• individuals, groups and social institutions
• diversity and equality
• the process of social and cultural change in sport
• the politics of sport

In level two you study
• football and society
• sociology applied to sport, culture and society
• sport and the media

    You complete a work placement of six weeks in the UK or overseas during level two. Your placement will be in a sport setting of your choice and gives insight into careers such as • sport development • sport media • local authority sport • voluntary sector sport • public services • professional sports clubs • schools • media organisations.

    The main themes of level three include crime, deviance, social control and the perceptions of leisure. You explore a range of topics including • deviance in sport • sport and celebrity culture • sport journalism.

    In one assignment, you develop your own media portfolio including newspaper reports and press releases.

    Finally, you combine your learning and knowledge to develop a research project. Past projects include examining celebrity culture in football, anti racist initiatives in sport and an investigation into the condition of modern rugby league.

    You benefit from the current field experiences of our lecturing team, visiting lecturers and practitioners. Our team has been involved in research, such as the Football and its Communities project which was funded by the Football Foundation. This research is currently being used to inform community policy and practice in English football.
