This course provides a broad, multidisciplinary study of physical education and school sport. It is an ideal course for those considering a career as a physical education (PE) teacher, or working in the wider area of school sport provision and development, and the wider education sector.

You develop your knowledge and understanding of
• the concepts, processes and content of the National Curriculum and other curricula, for example, GCSE and A level for Physical Education and their application to young people in teaching and learning 

• how physical education and school sport can contribute to developing confident and successful learners and responsible citizens

• contemporary and comparative issues that influence the wider context of physical education and sport in school and in surrounding communities

• the broad range of programmes and interventions associated with the current physical education and school sport environment in schools and their communities

• strategic knowledge and understanding of key policies and developments affecting the provision of physical education and school sport for young people

• your own strengths and weaknesses through employability focused work-based learning and develop strategies to improve your own skills and abilities in teaching, learning and leadership capabilities

During the course you have many opportunities to volunteer for placements with our numerous partners to gain relevant experience in the workplace in PE and school sport. There is also a professional PE, sport development and sport coaching conference for all PE and school sport students to attend to gain the latest knowledge, developments and practice from professional policy makers and practitioners. 

You have access to excellent teaching facilities and one of the finest suites of sport and exercise science laboratories in the UK. Teaching and learning includes lectures, seminars and tutorials, workshops, practical tasks and projects.

Graduates can go on to achieve full teacher status by completing further study after this course to gain a postgraduate certificate in education (PGCE), or via other routes such as the school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) and graduate teacher programme (GTP).

You also gain the skills and knowledge to begin a career in areas related to strategic physical education and school sport, and other wider roles in education.
