We designed this course for students with a non-business degree who wish to develop the knowledge and skills needed to begin or re-focus a career in international business and management.
Globalising markets are reshaping the way organisations are configured and the way that they conduct international business.
Global competitiveness has become a major concern for organisations that increasingly need new knowledge and more specialised skills.
You develop your knowledge of global business and the main areas involved in business management. This includes understanding the global business environment and the company responses to this. You also examine the impact of risk on global companies.
You develop your understanding of the operational and strategic issues facing global businesses and the international management skills needed to evaluate global market opportunities. To help you to develop your practical skills in a real world setting, we offer work related activities that may include • business simulations • an international consultancy project • visits to companies and organisations • guest speakers.
Your dissertation, which is a major project, is usually on an issue of strategic importance geared to your interest. It is your chance to demonstrate your research and project management skills to employers.

`My consultancy project was for a company in Manchester, as a project co-ordinator, I learnt how to connect the group with my client and my supervisor. 'I studied strategic management for three years at university in Russia. I then decided to study in the UK as I think a degree from a UK university gives you a good chance of getting a well-paid job in the future.
'I chose Sheffield Hallam as it has good tutors and a good position in the league table of universities. It was also a great opportunity to meet new friends from different countries and understand their cultures and customs.
'I had a placement at Gazprom, the largest Russian company, which extracts and distributes gas. Working at Gazprom helped me to understand the structure of the company and the processes that are going on within a company. I learned how to solve problems independently and also learned to communicate with people at all levels and with different languages.

`My work as account manager at Transcend Information is related to European market so studying in the UK really helped me.
`To evaluate an unfamiliar company is part of my job and the course taught me how to structure and analyse it.
`The consultancy project was very helpful. By contacting real companies, it gave me a real life experience about conducting business. In addition, I also learnt how to form and structure a formal business report.

Consultancy project

Our international students worked with translation company Applied Language Solutions (ALS) on a consultancy basis to tackle a number of briefs.
The first project was for a subsidiary website of ALS www.exportbox.co.uk launched to encourage UK businesses to export. It involved compiling information that businesses need to be aware of if they want to expand overseas.
The two other projects were for ALS. For one, the students conducted research into the use of digital marketing in South East Asia. For the other, they pulled together a feasibility report based on opening new offices in the Asia Pacific region. The research gathered was used by ALS when launching an office in the region.
How our students got involved
Once the students had been briefed, deadlines for written reports were set by their tutors. The students then presented their findings to ALS. The students were based at the University but kept in regular contact with the company to see the results of their consultancy advice in action.
Benefits to our students
The projects helped the students get a real grasp of what busy international businesses need. It enabled them to apply their theoretical knowledge and research techniques to a real business model. They also received constructive feedback which helped them enhance their skills.
Benefit to the company
The information, research and recommendations from the students were considered and used by the company. It offered an objective view on scenarios facing ALS on a daily basis.
ALS employs a number of graduates each year, and sees partnership programmes with educational institutions as an important part of their corporate responsibilities.

Future projects
Our students will be conducting research into launching a new product to foreign markets. They will get the chance to offer their thoughts on ALS’s new software platform SmartMATE, and its unique selling points, compared to other similar offerings on the market.
The students will be looking at the challenges the company faces in getting potential new users to understand what the software can do for them, looking at the challenges the company faces in getting users to trial the SmartMATE software.

Professional interests/current work
I am a senior lecturer in International Business and course leader for MSc Managing Global Business at Sheffield Hallam University Business School. Since joining the university in 2006, I have played a major part in the development and teaching of a range of international business modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In 2013-14 I will deliver a first year module to 12 new Nestlé employees as part of the BA (Hons) Professional Business Practice degree. This qualification is the first of its kind in the UK food industry and is part of Nestlé’s Academy Fast Start Academy programme.
Much of my pedagogical research and teaching interests revolve around cultural aspects of knowledge transfer. In particular, the international transfer of human resource management in global firms.
Business/organisation and research collaborations
Before entering academia I worked extensively in the UK and Japan in the fashion and automotive industries. I have maintained my industry links which have proved invaluable in securing student consultancy projects and guest lectures. I actively engage with the Venture Matrix and Employability Hub in Sheffield Business School who have helped me organise field trips to the Jaguar car plant in Liverpool. I am currently planning further trips for the coming academic year to John Lewis in Liverpool and Bentley in Crewe.
I work extensively in India as part of my course leader role and since 2009 have taken part in 10 cross-faculty recruitment drives in both India and Sri Lanka. I have also participated in British Council initiatives such as British Management Week (Chandigarh, 2010) as a guest lecturer.
I am currently developing the Sheffield Business School alumni network in India and will co-host the first alumni meeting in Pune/Mumbai at the end of May 2013 with one of our MBA alumnus.
I have developed partnerships with key Indian institutions including the prestigious Symbiosis University in Pune. This successful relationship has resulted in hosting two cohorts of Symbiosis MBA students who have studied alongside our MSc International Business students.
My general interests lie in the cultural issues in international management, the political economy of East Asia, specially Japan, China and India. My current PhD research at the University of Leeds Business School examines the transfer of Japanese human resource management in the Indian automotive industry. I will embark on fieldwork in India in 2013 and have utilised both global academic and business contacts to enable me to do this.
