About this course

The Government aims to improve outcomes for children, families and communities by improving the Children and Young People’s Workforce. We developed the courses in response to these aims.

National organisations including the Department for Education and the Teaching Agency are encouraging development of the workforce through to foundation degree level and on to honours degree level.

You need to be employed in a children and young people’s setting during the course as emphasis is placed on work-based learning.

This degree provides a foundation for progression to qualified teacher status (QTS). One current option is to progress on to a two year BA course with QTS at the end of your third year. There are some other progression routes are still being developed by the government and Sheffield Hallam is working in collaboration to help develop these routes.

Associated careers

This course will help you to become a senior practitioner in learning support, a learning support manager or develop a career in special educational needs. Progression to a degree with or without qualified teacher status is also available.

Professional recognition

This course has received endorsement by the Department for Education Teaching Agency for meeting their sector requirements for school support staff training and development.
