The course should be attractive to people who

We assess each module by written assignment and skills practice by observation. You complete a dissertation to gain the MSc.

'I looked at all the Masters level courses for coaching and mentoring around the country, and I was impressed to find many high profile ‘names’ actually teaching at Sheffield Hallam. I decided to go along to an open day in the summer and met the course leader, where we talked about course content and structure. I was really impressed by the open day, and the time that I spent with someone obviously greatly knowledgeable on the subject. It wasn’t long before I was putting pen to paper on my application. I really got a sense that the course was just what I had been looking for.
'I have been coaching in organisations as an external for probably fifteen years. In that time I have taken various courses and qualifications, but I felt that it was time to really take my knowledge and practice to the next level, the MSc is absolutely that – another level which challenges me both practically and academically. Having gained a post graduate certificate in coaching and mentoring I wanted to gain further and deeper learning in the subject to inform my professional work.
'The tutors in coaching and mentoring are, without exception, great minds! They both support us, and challenge us constantly. The great thing about this team is that they recognise where each individual is on their journey, and provide great opportunities to constantly push our limits. I particularly value the way in which our lecturers will put themselves ‘out there’ in live demonstrations and coaching exercises, these are a bunch of folk who are prepared to put themselves on the line for our learning. Being with the staff at Sheffield Hallam is often a memorable experience as they bring so much of themselves to our sessions, I can’t praise that highly enough.
'There is great fun, and both a sense of adventure and exploration in our sessions. I can’t think of a better way than that to support students – to communicate some of the joy of the subject through the way our learning is facilitated.
'Both my business partner and I have undertaken the course at the same time, and share our learning for the benefit of our business. The great thing about that is we choose what to implement within out work. We have had so much value from the course – professional standards, ethics, coaching approaches, supervision to name a few – these are all areas that have strengthened our offer to our clients when we have applied our learning to our work.
We are doing a lot of things differently, constantly holding up what we do against professional standards, the work of others, theoretical frameworks and this all adds to the quality of reflection and ultimately changes and enhances what we do.

`I have been involved in a number of coaching projects within my current organisation and wanted to explore a subject matter I was passionate about in more depth.
`I chose this course because of the reputation of Sheffield Business School and its association with expert individuals within the field of coaching and mentoring, for example David Clutterbuck, David Megginson, Lis Merrick and Paul Stokes.
`The tutors support you by being expert in their field and engaging in shared learning with the students. We have been challenged in a practical sense by applying skills in modules with our peers and in an intellectual sense as we discuss, debate and then go on to work independently to research and prepare our assignments.
`This course has opened up a rich horizon for me. I am already applying the skills and learning in my workplace. I have introduced a maternity mentoring programme to the business and built a series of supporting initiatives which will improve the experience of women returning to work post maternity. In addition to this I am now an internal coach for the business.
`My employer supported me by partially funding my MSc. I was also able to work flexibly to enable me to attend the study blocks. The requirement for independent study time should not be underestimated in order to make the most of this amazing learning experience. The reading and research needed is significant and there is an ongoing dilemma of balancing everything with a busy job, home life and children. Working flexibly (three days) enables me to have designated time each week for study, reading and assignments.
`The library and on-line resources are excellent, though sometimes the most recent texts take a while to get listed. I have been able to download many articles and e-books and the Distance Learner team have helped enormously when I needed key texts.'

'After doing some research on the different courses available at various universities my business partner and I felt that the course offered at Sheffield Hallam was the most appropriate for our needs.
