By written coursework. There are no traditional formal examinations. The MBA requires the completion of an assessed dissertation.
Subject to continuing accreditation, this course is accredited by the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM). Successful completion of the MBA and submission of a portfolio in line with BIFM requirements gains you the formal professional certified membership (CBIFM).
The MBA is also approved by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). On entry to the part-time course, or completion of the full-time course, you may register your experience for the RICS’ Assessment of Professional Competence.

`This course was appealing to me as I was already working in a facilities management (FM) environment. I felt it would enhance my FM knowledge and provide a credible qualification that would support the advancement of my career. In addition the course had the added benefit of being aligned to the BIFM recognised qualifications and is approved by RICS.
The tutors have been outstanding throughout the course and have always been more than willing to offer and give support whenever requested. I find part time study extremely effective, the support has been excellent and this suits my learning style, I tend to study in blocks rather than spreading it out.
The knowledge and experience I have gained to date during the course has had significant impact in terms of my career. The new found ability to operate at a greater strategic level, to use appropriate business language and demonstrate senior leadership behaviour has facilitated rapid advancement in terms of career position and remuneration. 'After 25 years of working in facilities for the hotel and catering industry and the NHS, I realised that despite accumulating significant knowledge and skills over the years I had limited nationally recognised qualifications to reflect my progression up the career ladder. I realised that these days when competing with numerous other applicants for jobs, at the very least you will need recognised qualifications on your CV in order to get selected for an interview. I became very conscious that if at any time in the future I wanted to progress further in my career then I would need to achieve such a qualification.
'I studied the undergraduate Certificate in Facilities Management in 2005 with funding from my employer. Although I was used to writing reports and other documentation during my daily work, I wasn’t sure how to write a university assignment, or carry out academic research. Completing the undergraduate certificate was a great way of finding out what was expected of me and soon I was very comfortable with studying.
'After successfully completing the undergraduate certificate I immediately progressed onto the MBA in Facilities Management. Studying for this postgraduate degree has been hugely beneficial in my daily work. It’s given me a different outlook – a new perspective. It offered me an opportunity to really start challenging my own way of thinking and rational and I have re-modelled the way in which I view the organisation that I work for. It has opened my mind and offered me greater recognition and the opportunity to evaluate how the services my facilities management colleagues and I provide contribute to the core business.
'But it’s on a personal level that I have gained the most out of academic study. I've never considered myself to be one of the clever kids. When it came to studying or business – I wasn't particularly confident and as I progressed in my career I always felt that I was at a disadvantage not having a degree. Now I have finished my degree and I realise that I have gained far greater confidence and business acumen, as well as recognised proof of my abilities reflected in the academic qualifications that I have achieved.
'With part-time study, you have to find a style that suits you best. For some students, it may be studying in the evenings and perhaps late into the night. I found it best to study at the weekends. I tend to work long hours, and when I got home in the evening the last thing I wanted to do was study until the early hours. But, most importantly, it’s about getting the study and work life balance right to ensure you also commit time to family and friends too.'
