This is a fast track conversion course for graduates from unrelated disciplines who want to become chartered surveyors. The course is also suitable if you are a professional working in a property or surveying role and want to improve your skills and career prospects in commercial property and the real estate profession.
Real estate operates in a dynamic and complex environment and draws on a diverse range of skills. This course gives you the technical, commercial and personal skills to prepare you for a successful career as a chartered surveyor.
This course is suitable for both UK and international students. Many international surveying firms recruit our graduates who pursue careers globally. It has been designed to ensure that you are well equipped to progress your career irrespective of where in the world your career may lead you.
The course includes practical, client-focused property projects. These involve you completing technical and professional tasks and applying creative solutions that draw on your developing knowledge. You study • property law • economics • planning • land development • construction • investment and finance • valuation • corporate real estate and portfolio management.
You benefit from a range of teaching, learning and assessment techniques. Intensive study weeks allow you to work on complex, professional briefs with an emphasis on the latest thinking from the real estate sector. One of the modules is an international project which currently takes place in Shanghai with assistance from international surveying firms.
Teaching takes place in a newly refurbished, dedicated building at our City Campus. The course is also fully supported by online resources.
You work alongside students studying related subjects by participating in an interdisciplinary development project. This increases your understanding of their roles and responsibilities, how your role as a real estate surveyor interacts with those roles and develops the skills and knowledge essential to an effective professional practitioner.
You can also benefit from our interactive netcommunity especially formed to support current and past real estate students to network with each other. We welcome the continuing involvement of our graduates with this course, from participation at employers' fairs through to advising students during integrated projects.
Our department has run RICS-accredited courses for more than 40 years. Many of our tutors have written textbooks for surveying students and are active in research and continuing professional development.

MSc Real Estate
Why did you choose to come to study at Sheffield Hallam University?
'I was interested in the property market and it is big business in China so I looked at courses which would specifically help me in this area. The course is actually really good in the rankings and is among the top-rated courses in the UK.
What do you think about your course, the content, how it is taught, its features and benefits, the facilities that you use?
'The facilities at the University are great. The cafeteria and learning centre are just perfect. The university accommodation is also very clean and secure as well as being really close to the university facilities.
What have you learned from your course?
'The course can be intense but the tutors are very responsible and they provide thorough feedback
'I have learned a lot from the course and as it is very specific I am hoping that it will help me when it comes to finding a job, either in the UK or in China.
What do you think is the best thing about Sheffield Hallam University?
'I am honoured to be here and I hope one day that Sheffield Hallam will be honoured by me having been here.
What would your top tips be to other international students thinking of coming to study in the UK?
'There are many beautiful places around Sheffield so as well as studying, students should try to be happy and look for fun things to do. It is important not to just stay within the Chinese community as there are so many opportunities to interact with others.
It is great to practise your English and get used to the UK environment and, though it is difficult at first, it will eventually feel really great to have done so.'
