About this course

Foundation degrees bring together employers, universities and colleges to design and deliver courses that target specific employment sectors. They provide the skills and knowledge you need to succeed in today’s workplace.

We developed this course jointly with Network Rail and other rail employers who have responsibility for track renewals and maintenance.

This part-time route is ideal if you are currently employed in the industry and looking to further your career. You will need the support of your employer.

There are three specialist routes through the course that reflect the structure of the industry. They are • signal engineering • civil and track engineering • electrical and mechanical engineering.

A common first year teaches you the basic engineering disciplines used across the industry. In the second year, you specialise in your chosen route. You take academic and practical sessions in the University but we also place great emphasis on the value of work-based learning.

An important part of your studies is your work-based learning in the rail industry. To complete the course, you must have access to the rail infrastructure as part of your work duties.

After successfully completing the foundation degree, you can continue your part-time study to gain a BEng honours degree.

The course is supported by • Network Rail • Balfour Beatty • Amey.
