At a glance
Train for a fulfilling career as a science teacher in a subject area that needs more qualified graduates. This course is primarily designed for students who want to teach science at secondary level. In your third year, you spend at least 24 weeks in two or more schools developing your teaching skills and gaining your QTS status.
Key points
• Enhance your job prospects in a subject area where there is a shortage of teachers.
• Study to teach all sciences to Key Stage 3 and one subject to Key Stage 4 and beyond.
• Spend at least 24 weeks in two or more schools developing your teaching skills.
What is science with education and QTS?
You study science to bring your expertise up to degree level, while learning how to teach science to a standard which meets the requirements of qualified teacher status (QTS). QTS is the accreditation that you need to be able to teach in schools in England and Wales.
This course
If you have relevant qualifications or academic credit and want to teach science in secondary schools, this course is designed for you. You teach in a subject area where there is a shortage of qualified science teachers and a need for graduates with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The course includes
• two years of science and education-based study to bring you up to degree level
• some experience of teaching in schools early on in the course
• a final year where you gain significant teaching experience in at least two schools and gain QTS
You study biology, chemistry and physics to prepare you to teach at Key Stage 3 and then go on to specialise in one science for teaching at Key Stage 4 and beyond.
During the early part of your course you have some school experience. However it is in your final year that you gain the teaching skills and experience you need to gain QTS. You spend at least 24 weeks in two or more schools practicing your teaching and subject knowledge.
A personal, school-based, trained mentor is assigned to you to help develop your teaching skills and improve through working with individual pupils, small groups and whole classes.
We have strong partnerships with local and regional secondary schools to ensure that you receive high quality training whilst on placement. You may even find employment, as many of our trainees do, at one of your placements.
Key areas of study
Key areas include biology, chemistry and physics, together with maths and ICT to support your teaching and education.
Our laboratories are purpose built to reflect the types of labs you will experience in schools. For subject specialism modules you also have access to the industry-standard university research laboratories.

Hear from taster course participants
'I would most definitely recommend this course to other interested parties. I attended in order to decide whether I still thought teaching was for me, and without having the unique opportunity to spend a day in a school I think I still would have struggled with my decision.
'It didn't seem to matter whether you were on the fence about teaching – as I know one of the attendees later realised teaching wasn't for her,
but having access to valuable information regarding getting into teaching, speaking to those from the teaching profession and spending time in a school, were, for me most useful. Since the course I have been able to research the numerous routes into teaching and I have decided I would like to pursue a PGCE Primary.'
Sharner Lal, taster course attendee
'I really gained a lot from this course. I got first hand information about what it is all about being a teacher in UK. I must acknowledge that the organisers of this course did tremendously well it was really fantastic. I had a whole day experience in a school where I had the opportunity to be in two different class rooms. It was a wonderful experience to see how
teaching goes on, classroom management, the use of ICT facilities, and the role of teaching assistant.
'This actually boosted my enthusiasm to go out there and teach. I got more insight into a practical responsibility of a teacher and the positive relationship a teacher builds with pupils.'
