This module covers reading, writing, speaking and listening for academic purposes and should improve your English dramatically.
You study either
• long thin – one two-hour class a week for two semesters
• short fat – two two-hour classes a week for one semester
You are also expected to do a lot of work outside the class times.
You work in groups of approximately 15–18 students of different nationalities who could be studying on different academic courses. The classes are intensive but friendly, and you learn about English and other cultures and meet new people.
English language support classes (1.5 hours per week)
These classes help improve your academic English and may cover grammar, reading, writing, listening or speaking depending on the wishes of the group.

English for postgraduate students – focusing on the general language skills you need at postgraduate level particularly reading, writing and preparing for dissertations.
English for research students – for students working independently on a research degree. The focus is on practising and developing the language you need to explain and present your research in both written and spoken formats.
English for business – for postgraduate students studying on courses related to business and management. The focus is on developing academic skills, vocabulary and communication skills through broad business contexts such as globalisation and marketing.
Conversational English – for all levels, focusing on everyday English language in an informal context with plenty of opportunities for speaking.
English language workshops (1 hour per week)
These one hour workshops can be taken in addition to the English language support classes. You can attend each one once a week.
