What is law?
An often fast-paced and far-reaching system of rules designed to ensure equality in society and protect individuals' rights. The legal profession has two different strands, both aimed at securing the best possible outcome for their clients. As a barrister, you plead cases on behalf of your client in Court. As a solicitor you manage your client's case from the very beginning right the way through to its conclusion.
This course
Gain qualifications in both the English and French legal systems. You study at Sheffield Hallam for years one and three and at the University of Paris-Est Créteil in years two and four. The University of Paris-Est Créteil is an excellent partner university, ranked in the top four French universities offering dual degrees.
Throughout the course you study in a vibrant bilingual environment where English and French students learn together. This approach helps you to develop your linguistic and interpersonal skills. You study French throughout the course and in Paris you learn French law in French. Your resulting fluency in French is always a valuable asset in law and in the commercial sector generally. During your time abroad you may also be eligible for an Erasmus grant.
After graduating you qualify for the UK LLB qualification and a French M1, equivalent to a Masters in Law. You study the core law subjects needed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Bar Council for academic legal training. You also study law options that prepare you for a professional career in law or the wider public, business and commercial sectors.
The French M1 undergraduate award allows you to take legal studies which can lead to professional legal qualifications in France. The modules offered at the University of Paris-Est Créteil are subject to variation, so for more information visit www.en.u-pec.fr

Law clinic
Our law clinic is a fully regulated solicitors' practice where you work under the supervision of qualified solicitors on real cases from first interview to county court or employment tribunal, as appropriate. It gives you an insight into the pressures and demands of the legal profession.
Law in practice
You can build on practical experience in the law by applying to spend one day each week with a legal service provider to gain invaluable experience within a professional setting. Law in practice is often in a solicitor's office working on real life cases.
Law in practice (international)
To gain a greater understanding of law in practice in an international setting, you can apply to spend the summer working law firms across the USA.
Innocence Project UK programme
You can apply to work on a real case of an alleged miscarriage of justice on our Innocence project. You gain a unique insight into the criminal justice system which many do not experience until in practice.
Law in the community
You work in a team to research and deliver presentations on different areas of law to various community groups. This develops your legal research and presentation skills.
Mooting
Being able to advocate is an essential part of a solicitor's or barrister's career. You represent fictitious clients in a mock trial, usually on a matter of civil law. This takes place in our on-campus moot court.
Mooting and Debating Society
We have a very active Mooting and Debating Society and members take part in both internal and national competitions. We have enjoyed considerable success in these competitions. In 2009 we beat over 60 university law schools to win the final of the Oxford University Press (OUP)/BPP National Mooting Competition and were finalists in 2010.
The Law Department at Sheffield Hallam University were shortlisted for the prestigious Lawworks National Pro Bono Awards for Best Contribution by a Law School 2012.

This qualifying law degree exempts you from the Common Professional Examination of the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Bar Council. The French Maîtrise allows you to take legal studies which can lead to professional legal qualifications in France.

'As part of the dual degree in French and English business law jointly delivered by Sheffield Hallam University and Université Paris Est Créteil in France, I spent my first and third years of studies in England, studying English law, and my second and current year in France, studying French law.
'I have always been attracted to foreign cultures, and this course represents an exceptional opportunity for the discovery of two completely different but equally fascinating legal systems, cultures, and societies.
'Sheffield is a great city to study in, with a very active student life and many events organised by the University; while Créteil is only a few miles away from Paris, one of the most wonderful cities in the world. The contrast between both environments is what makes this degree lively and unique.
'The quality of teaching is very good in both universities and even if the workload can be quite heavy at times, Maîtrise students always have someone to turn to for help, and their efforts are worth it in the end.
'The degree enables students to perfect their language skills, and to obtain both an LLB and a French Master I at the end of the course, which is an invaluable advantage when applying for graduate studies and in the eyes of future employers.
'I have applied successfully to various masters in London, and I am intending to follow a legal practice course after my graduate studies, to become a solicitor in England. LLB (Hons) Maitrise en Droit Francais
'When I entered the double Maitrise program in 2007 – jointly run by Sheffield Hallam University and Université Paris-Est Créteil – I had just graduated from high school in Paris. I had good grades, particularly in languages, but wasn’t really sure whether law was what I wanted to do: what attracted me really was the fact that it would enable me to study two years abroad, become bilingual and discover a completely different culture and lifestyle.
'Being currently in the fourth (and final) year of the Maitrise, I know better now: I would like to work for an international law firm. I have realised how lucky I am to study in the course: thanks to its excellent reputation, it was easier for me than for regular students to find placements in law firms during the summer. Academically speaking, the degree also gives impressive credentials to apply for LPC (Legal Practice Course) in England and masters degree in France and in the USA.
'Speaking from experience, I can say that most English students find it challenging and interesting when they come to Paris (for their 2nd and 4th year, the 1st and 3rd years being spent in Sheffield). We have lots of lectures and sometimes exams during seminars. The way students work and learn is significantly different in France compared with England but, if you are hard working, the course will enable you to learn both English and French Law through a rigorously comparative approach to these radically different legal systems.'
