I chose the course because I was attracted to the 'sandwich' year. Fortunately, I managed to secure a placement during this period and I have started a job permanently with the same company having finished at Hallam. This just proves how invaluable an industrial placement year is getting your foot in the door for future employment!
The Built Environment placement department were very helpful in encouraging me (and others) to apply for other placement opportunities. I got the placement from a speculative application to the company - a vacancy was not published.
While I was on placement I was part of the site management team - junior site manager. Generally I assisting with the day-to-day running of the site and carried out tasks such as setting out, site inductions, material requisitions, delivery scheduling, plant orders and workforce timesheets. The practical knowledge learnt during this time was fantastic, and I worked with a great team of people.
As well as the placement the best bits of the course have been meeting many new friends, from all from different backgrounds. Many of whom will be friends for life. The practical modules were great, land surveying in particular. Also the staff were excellent, and always had time to answer queries if you had any.
