What is building surveying?
Building surveyors can provide advice on all aspects of property and construction, from large to small developments. It can range from giving advice on conservation to dealing with new development, and is therefore a very varied career.

This course

Study all the key areas of building surveying, such as the environment, building conservation and fire studies, on this professionally focused course. You learn at a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors approved partnership centre for surveying education. We provide you with the practical and thorough training needed to become a successful, well-rounded professional surveyor.

The course introduces you to the academic and theoretical aspects of the subject through a series of lectures, seminars and tutorials. Although, the emphasis of the course is practical and you learn how to apply this first hand in • laboratory classes • workshops • fieldwork • site visits • self-directed project work.

On the first and final years of the course, interdisciplinary projects are carried out that show the roles of other professionals within the industry.

You are taught by a lecturer team consisting of experienced building surveyors and other building professionals who can give you first-hand perspectives on the industry. You also benefit from the expertise of visiting lecturers from consultancy companies and large contractors, reinforcing your practical and professional knowledge.

We have good links with local professional and voluntary groups with large property portfolios. They provide various building stock for case studies and project work, which centre on actual buildings with real clients.

These links can also give you a head-start in year three when you have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learnt on a one year placement. It’s an excellent opportunity to enhance your career and starting salary prospects, by working full-time in a building organisation or professional practice.

After completing the placement, some students take up full-time employment with their placement organisation and finish their studies part-time.

There are many rewarding and well-paid opportunities for surveyors, and our graduate surveyors are sought by leading organisations.

Key areas of study
As well as introducing you to the core topics in building surveying we give you the opportunity to specialise in either building conservation, building control or project management.

Contact hours
You take part in a minimum of 12 taught hours per week during your first and second year.  The normal teaching pattern typically involves one lecture and one seminar per week, per module.  You also have additional timetabled hours periodically for other activities such as laboratory work, guest lectures and field trips.

In your final year, taught teaching is supplemented independent research for your dissertation. Throughout your course, you are supported by a personal tutor.
