What is hospitality business management?
The hospitality industry is competitive, fast growing and international, currently doing £68 billion of business a year in the UK alone. It covers a wide range of sectors and so a knowledge and understanding of the industry as a whole is an advantage.

Hospitality business management is about delivering an experience that meets expectations for the customer whilst making a profit. It covers areas including • deluxe hotels • restaurants • designer bars • food service management • specialist catering for sporting and other events • budget hotels • quick service retail restaurants • pubs and bars • nightclubs • running your own business • gastro pubs • private members clubs.

About this course

Study on a course designed to meet the challenges of the £68 billion UK hospitality industry that has a reputation for producing high-calibre graduates. Our students have been winners or finalists of The Young Guns Competition, an industry award that recognises students who have excelled during their placement, for the last ten years.

You study business and management, food and drink management and facilities management, with options to study conference and events management or culinary arts. This allows you to focus on specialist areas of the industry as well as having a broad understanding of the industry as a whole. 

Throughout the course you develop your practical expertise using dedicated facilities in our professional kitchens. We are constantly developing these to ensure you develop the skills you need to work in the industry. 

You are taught by lecturers with considerable international industry experience in a wide range of roles, including research and consultancy, training and development, food and beverage operations, hotel management, banqueting and conferencing.

In your first year, you develop your understanding of key principles in hospitality. You then choose whether to specialise in either food and beverage business or hospitality events business, in your second year. 

In your third year, you get the opportunity to build on what you’ve learnt with a one year paid work placement. Placements are a valuable way of increasing your employability and starting salary. We help you find a suitable placement at a major hospitality provider such as • Walt Disney World Resort, Florida • The Old Toad, Rochester • Captains House Inn, Cape Cod • Sandals Grande Ocho Rios, Jamaica • Baltimore Marriott Waterfront • Marriott Beijing Great Wall.

The final year enables you to develop your ability to make strategic decisions and to critique practice. 

Your learning involves taking part in lectures, seminars, workshops, projects, specialist sessions using our modern facilities at City Campus.

International award
You can also complete an international version of this qualification which places greater emphasis on the global events industry. You must take a work or study placement abroad to gain this award.

There is a growing demand for graduates with management skills in global hospitality organisations such as multinational hotels and independent restaurants. After graduating, our students have found careers with • Fairmont Hotels • Hilton International • Revolution Bars • Macdonald Hotels. 

Following on from working in the industry three to five years after graduation, our students have secured roles within global companies, such as business development executive at STR Global Deloitte and deputy management positions and assistant manager at Hilton Worldwide.

As a founder member of the Association of Event Management Educators (AEME), we were involved in establishing academic benchmarks in events education.

Entry requirements

2014 entry requirements

Normally five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English language and mathematics, plus one of the following

• 240–280 points including at least 160 points from two GCE/VCE A levels or BTEC National qualifications. We accept general studies. AS levels may count towards these points. Key Skills qualifications are not included. To be considered for a 240 points offer you must have more than nine months of relevant work experience in the hospitality industry and a reference from a current employer.

• Access – an Access to HE Diploma with at least 45 credits at level 3 and 15 credits at level 2. At least 15 level 3 credits must be at merit grade or above, from a QAA-recognised Access to HE course, or an equivalent Access to HE certificate.

• entry with prior credit – we consider applications for direct entry to the final year from those holding Higher National Diplomas or equivalent qualifications

If English is not your first language you will need an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, with a minimum score of 5.5 in each skill.

We welcome applications from people of any age. We may be flexible in our normal offer if you can show a commitment to succeed and have the relevant skills and experience. This must show that you will benefit from and finish the course successfully.
