Placements
The main focus of your placement is observation and research into a wide range of issues related to the workplace, including structures, practices and roles.
In year one and two, you have two placements each lasting eight weeks. In year 3 your placement lasts 7 weeks with 5 research days to complete a small-scale enquiry.

`I chose the education studies with psychology and counselling course as I knew I would like to be a teacher. Even though this is the career I was aiming for the course gave me extra routes/options as well, so if I did ever change my mind I could go into a career in psychology or counselling, as well as education. This was the perfect course for me as I learnt extra things that I can take with me into my career as a teacher; such as counselling skills and an understanding of the development of children's learning through psychology.
`The highlight of my course has been learning counselling skills. Not only can I use these in my career as a teacher but I can also use them in everyday life. My personal tutor who I had for my dissertation was excellent, the support and guidance I received has been of great benefit to me and I am really appreciative of that.
`My placements have also been major highlights of the course. I had three work placements throughout my course. My favourite and the most beneficial one, was my final placement in the third year. I did this placement whilst doing my dissertation. The school was a mixed special needs school and I will never forget my time there. I focused my dissertation around autism and how the school prepares the students for independent living. The school gave me so much support throughout my time there. These placements really gave me the opportunity to put theory into practice and I learnt so much, things that I could only learn in a real education setting.
`I have recently finished my course and am very proud to be graduating with a first class honours degree. This wasn't something I ever thought I could achieve as I had to develop my grades from 2:2’s to a 1st. I was able to do this because I used the resources, communicated with my tutors and prioritised my studies. The next stage for me is a graduate teacher programme in primary education, which I am really looking forward to starting in September.
`I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Sheffield Hallam University. I would recommend the university and my course to anyone.'
