We have a highly respected and lively jewellery and metalwork department. Our roots are based in Sheffield's historic traditions of silversmithing and metalwork. However, the course covers a broad range of approaches, and constantly aims to exploit new materials, technologies and ways of thinking.

This course begins by equipping you with a strong foundation in jewellery and metalwork processes and techniques, such as soldering, stone setting and hand raising. We also challenge your thinking about materials and designing contemporary silverware and jewellery.

During the course you learn to
• apply these techniques in your own practice
• think independently
• develop your creative potential through hands on exploration of materials including precious metals, plastic, textiles and wood

In your second year, you design work for national competitions and individual clients. You also make and sell work through a public selling exhibition. This provides an important challenge and tests your ability.

We want you to graduate with the skills to start your own business or develop a career in jewellery and metalwork.

Our students continue to be successful in live projects and competitions organised by local, national and international professional bodies, such as the Company of Cutlers, Sheffield, and the Goldsmiths' Company, London.

You may be able to take part in an international exchange or study visit during the course. Recent students have visited places such as Zurich, Seoul, Barcelona and Tokyo.

Our teaching staff are practising makers, renowned in the industry. They have created commissioned pieces including the Cutting Edge sculpture, the St Leger Trophy and a collection of corporate gifts.

We have strong links with Sheffield's well-established metalworking community, including sponsorship from the Sheffield Assay Office. We have also received funding for projects from National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies, the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths, the Millennium Galleries and local Sheffield manufacturers.
