Background
Routes into Languages is a government-funded four year project which aims to increase the take up of language courses in higher education by encouraging more young people to continue studying languages at school and college and into university.
The programme is supported by £8 million from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. Regional networks were set up to deliver a range of activities and events to promote the role of languages in business development and economic growth.

Andrew Constable

Course leader, MSc Strategic Marketing
Prior to working at Sheffield Hallam University I worked in the UK brewing industry.
I worked for Bass which through organisation changes mergers and takeovers became Bass Brewers then Coors Brewers and eventually Molson Coors. I worked in sales progressing through promotions (in sales, trade and consumer) to customer marketing and finally through to brand marketing. My final role was head of media, where my responsibilities included media planning / buying across all trade and consumer channels, agency review and fee negotiations, brand PR activity and TV production cost control. I was responsible for controlling the marketing department’s £80m revenue budget.
In the area of media buying / planning and PR I introduced consumer insight programmes which were instrumental in improving not only the planning but the buying effectiveness of all the company's media activity. This area of communication effectiveness and the changing use of media by consumers continue to be an area of interest.
Whilst most of this work was UK based there were a number of brand launches overseas which required either direct media support, managed from the UK, or consultancy advice on best practice.
My wider business experience included being a key member (marketing) of the team planning team working on the integration of Carlsberg Tetley, in anticipation of a merger that never happened. This project team was cross functional and supported by McKinsey consultants. In addition I contributed to many industry bodies such as the Incorporated Society of British Advertisers TV Action Group, I was also a member of the Advertising Association's Digital Media Group paving the way for advertising codes within digital media in the UK.
I am committed to the employability agenda for Sheffield Hallam University; helping undergraduates gain work placements and helping to develop the University’s consultancy project module.
As course leader I am continually looking at ways to develop the course making the content and teaching practices relevant to international and home students.
Specialist skills, areas of expertise and recent business experience:
• media planning and insight
• negotiation skills
• advertising effectiveness
• creative workshops
• retail marketing
Mark Ellis

Senior lecturer
I am a senior lecturer within the Department of Management at Sheffield Business School. I joined the University in early 2012 after over 20 years in education and the knowledge based industries.
My teaching is mainly in the areas of business management, strategy, business start up and growth along with enterprise, entrepreneurship, innovation and change management. Prior to joining the University I worked as a business adviser and management consultant for several years where I supported leaders and organisations from new start micro businesses to multi national PLCs.
My MBA studies at Edinburgh Business School combine well with my practitioner background and current research interests which together give me a well rounded approach to my teaching. This also enables me to relate taught topics to my own professional experiences.
I enjoy teaching and am keen to ensure students get the best out of the courses. I have a particular passion for enterprise and innovation. This is directly linked to my work as a consultant and also because I have started businesses myself and recognise the challenges and rewards that this brings.
Teaching Interests
• enterprise
• entrepreneurship
• creativity and innovation
• leadership
Research Interests
• sustainable business approaches and models
• ethical business

Course leader, MSc International Marketing
I worked in the publicity and editorial departments for several fiction and non fiction publishing companies in London after graduating in English literature. I also worked for a year with an events and conference organisation that involved European travel.
I was a member of the National Union of Journalists for some years and was involved in PR activities. I went on to manage marketing departments in publishing houses before moving to Sheffield. I took a maternity break during which I freelanced as a copy editor and proof reader as well as copy writing for government departments.
I managed marketing teams in Higher Education on my return to full-time work and studied my masters as a mature student. I began lecturing for Oxford College of Marketing in 2000, delivering intensive and distance learning Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) courses before taking a full-time permanent job as a senior lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University in 2009.
I am committed to the employability agenda for Sheffield Hallam University, working with placement students and providers and negotiating consultancy projects.

Course leader, MSc Managing Global Business, senior lecturer International Business
Professional interests/current work
I am a senior lecturer in International Business and course leader for MSc Managing Global Business at Sheffield Hallam University Business School. Since joining the university in 2006, I have played a major part in the development and teaching of a range of international business modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In 2013-14 I will deliver a first year module to 12 new Nestlé employees as part of the BA (Hons) Professional Business Practice degree. This qualification is the first of its kind in the UK food industry and is part of Nestlé’s Academy Fast Start Academy programme.
Much of my pedagogical research and teaching interests revolve around cultural aspects of knowledge transfer. In particular, the international transfer of human resource management in global firms.
Business/organisation and research collaborations
Before entering academia I worked extensively in the UK and Japan in the fashion and automotive industries. I have maintained my industry links which have proved invaluable in securing student consultancy projects and guest lectures. I actively engage with the Venture Matrix and Employability Hub in Sheffield Business School who have helped me organise field trips to the Jaguar car plant in Liverpool. I am currently planning further trips for the coming academic year to John Lewis in Liverpool and Bentley in Crewe.
I work extensively in India as part of my course leader role and since 2009 have taken part in 10 cross-faculty recruitment drives in both India and Sri Lanka. I have also participated in British Council initiatives such as British Management Week (Chandigarh, 2010) as a guest lecturer.
I am currently developing the Sheffield Business School alumni network in India and will co-host the first alumni meeting in Pune/Mumbai at the end of May 2013 with one of our MBA alumnus.
I have developed partnerships with key Indian institutions including the prestigious Symbiosis University in Pune. This successful relationship has resulted in hosting two cohorts of Symbiosis MBA students who have studied alongside our MSc International Business students.
My general interests lie in the cultural issues in international management, the political economy of East Asia, specially Japan, China and India. My current PhD research at the University of Leeds Business School examines the transfer of Japanese human resource management in the Indian automotive industry. I will embark on fieldwork in India in 2013 and have utilised both global academic and business contacts to enable me to do this.
