We have courses accredited by
Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors ( RICS)
Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB)
Association of Building Engineers (ABE)
Accreditation by these professional bodies demonstrates our course meets their high standards in both content and quality. Two members of our staff are also chairs of the RICs Assessment of Professional Competence panels.
We have developed tailored short courses for continuing professional development in conjunction with a number of employers, to enable their staff to update their knowledge in this rapidly developing sector. For example, in partnership with the ABE, we have developed a top-up award to allow professionals with many years of work experience to enhance their academic skills, allowing them to further their careers by achieving full professional body membership.
We have also recently been successful in reaching an agreement with the Kier Group plc, one of the UKs leading construction companies, to deliver a foundation degree and a follow-on top-up award for their staff. The course will be developed in close consultation with Kier and is an exciting addition to our portfolio.
In partnership with Barratt Developments, we have developed a tailor-made programme to give employees the skills and expertise they need to strengthen the firm in the future.
Application for the foundation degree will launch in June 2013 and successful candidates will be invited to an induction ceremony later this year.
Construction research
We are part of the built environment department which achieved an excellent outcome from the Research Assessment Exercise 2008. 80 per cent of our research activity was rated as of international standard, 40 per cent of international excellence, and 5 per cent as world-leading in terms of originality, significance and rigour.
The excellence of the department's research is further emphasised by the many national and international awards received in recent years from key professional industry bodies and academic journals, in recognition of our innovation, authorship and dissemination
We also work closely with the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research.
Research outputs focus on peer-reviewed refereed journal papers, refereed conference papers, authored books, professional journal articles and other recognised scholarly works.
We present our research to national and international academic and professional audiences through recognised networks, principally The International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) and The Association of Researchers in Construction Management (ARCOM).
