Social work
We have provided social work courses since 1965, and remain a leading provider of social work training. Our courses combine academic study and practice learning to fully prepare you for your career ahead. We have an excellent employment record which is testament to this.
Social workers are trained to help people who are having difficulties in their lives, or whose actions cause significant harm or problems for others.
They aim to help people live as independently as possible, by providing services to help support, care for or protect them when necessary.
Our social work degree is approved by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). This means that when you graduate you are eligible to apply to register with the GSCC Social Care Register to practice as a social worker.
We offer continuing professional development modules and short courses. Find out more.
Our health and social care courses place a strong emphasis on interprofessional learning. This means that you train alongside practitioners from other health professions. Find out more.

Together in the real world of health and social care
Our health and social care courses place a strong emphasis on interprofessional learning. This means that you train alongside practitioners from other health professions. So, depending on your course you could spend time working alongside

• nurses
• midwives
• operating department practitioners
This gives you a fresh perspective on situations. And it also prepares you for the real world. Collaboration between health professionals is increasing as organisations try to provide a more integrated and effective service. At Sheffield Hallam we understand that by working together we can we give the best possible care.
Partnership to improve social care in Eastern Europe
Social work education in Eastern Europe is being given a major boost by a unique partnership project between Sheffield Hallam University and institutions in Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovenia and Georgia.
Organised by the Centre for Health and Social Care Research at Sheffield Hallam and funded by the European Union Tempus programme, the Advancing the Three Cycle System in Social Work Education (ACES) project is worth over €1million and runs for three years.
The project aims to develop and improve social work education programmes in Eastern Europe by sharing best practice among social care academics across Europe. It includes the development of PhD programmes, regional social work education, a masters degree in social care, the creation of a journal of social policy and social work, and the development of an international social work module.
Peter Nelson, principal lecturer in social work, is academic director of the project. He said: "We're building on previous work with colleagues at Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Association of Social Workers which helped establish social work education in Georgia.
"The overall aims of the projects are to embed social work education, to integrate practice and research in a more effective way and to share and disseminate best practice in social work practice, education and research.
"With a budget of €1.1million, we're able to maintain collaboration with partners at Tbilisi and Ljubljana University in Slovenia from the earlier project, as well as develop partnerships with University of Kiev Mohyla Academy in Ukraine, Tallinn University in Estonia and Vilnius Pedagogical University in Lithuania."
Social care educators from the Ukraine, Lithuania, Slovenia and Georgia visited Sheffield Hallam earlier in the year for a week of working with academics. This was followed by a meeting at Ljubljana University Slovenia and a summer school in Vilnius Lithuania, where PhD students from Georgia and Ukraine are currently working together on research skill development, facilitated by Sheffield Hallam and partner academics.
