Great teacher training placements

'The most important element of teaching that my pupils have taught me is how to differentiate and make learning accessible to all and on an individual level.'
Laura Scales, trainee teacher
We believe that teaching is all about the learner. That's why we've invested heavily in building a great network of teacher-training placements.
A unique approach to placements
We provide our trainee teachers with two contrasting placements, providing access to a wide range of different learners. This furnishes them with the practical skills and experience they need to manage behaviour and control the classroom; it also provides the opportunity to refine their teaching styles.
Support while on placement
In 2010, Ofsted commented on the 'exceptional quality of senior mentor coordinators' at Sheffield Hallam. We pride ourselves on the outstanding levels of support we offer to our trainee teachers while on placement. The support you receive may differ, depending on your route into teaching, but usually consists of University tutors, trained mentors in each placement context, your course peers and other educational professionals.
Mutually beneficial placements
We work with our placement partners to our mutual advantage
• they provide superb placement opportunities for our trainee teachers
• they help us with the development of our courses, so that they're always up to date and practically relevant
• they enable our students to put into practice the latest research and innovative teaching practices

Tricia Young
Senior lecturer
My particular expertise is in primary science education. I am passionate about science teaching and hope to inspire students to feel the same. In particular I enjoy helping students to observe and ask questions about their environment and to think of exciting and creative ways in which they can help young children develop positive attitudes towards science. As well as teaching on the primary science modules, I also teach on other modules relating to professional practice and international developments.
I am currently involved in developing links between student teachers in Australia, America, Africa and Europe so that students in the second year of their course have an opportunity to visit international educational settings. I now line-manage a group of staff and help lead developments within teacher education.
My research interests include the development of investigative science work in support of learners' questioning, exploration and explanatory skills and students' attitudes towards learning science. My publications include curriculum development materials.
I joined Sheffield Hallam in 1991 having been a teacher of Y1 to Y7 pupils. Before that I spent a year in Sweden teaching English to adults.
Lyndsay Gray

Senior lecturer in primary English
I currently work as a senior lecturer in primary English. In this role, I teach students from level 4-6 and will also be teaching on the BATL course as the English module leader and cohort three leader.
Before working at Sheffield Hallam I was a primary school teacher. A significant part of my job was to lead the development of literacy. It was my job to develop this subject and encourage creativity and to build confidence in teachers about the style and requirements of each subject being taught. This school-based project means that I will lead a series of staff meetings over the next two years to enthuse the staff and offer advice and strategies which could guide both the children and teachers through the necessary elements of each genre.
My other roles involve being an academic tutor, dissertation tutor and university link tutor for several schools in Derbyshire. A fascinating part of my teaching job was to mentor a number of students in varying stages of their courses and learning, carrying out formal observations and students’ reviews in order to challenge and support their development. This role has allowed me to use the skills that the advanced and accredited courses have given me, approaches and strategies which I have found useful when dealing with students and teachers alike.
As part of my personal on-going education I completed a Masters degree with Sheffield Hallam University in 2007. My assignments covered the subjects of leading a curriculum area in school, student mentoring and leading and managing the development of a core subject in school. These were all aspects of my job which I have felt to be of great importance, and these research assignments offered me the opportunity to study the concepts and theories that have impacts and consequences in schools each day.
Throughout my career, leading change and initiatives has been something I have been keen to do in order to constantly up-date teaching practices to maintain the interest of the pupils, and as a development of my management experience.
My interest in research is currently developing further as part of the English team's study into students' literate identities. We collectively presented this study at the UKLA conference in July, and hope to continue with this line of study in the future.
Sarah Williams
Senior lecturer early years and primary teacher education
My particular area of expertise is in physical education and school sport. I passionately believe that physical education is essential in children's development and can play a fundamental role in raising school standards. In particular I enjoy supporting students to challenge perceptions and develop increased confidence in engaging learners through physical activity. As well as teaching physical education, I also teach a range of foundation subjects within the early years and primary teacher programmes.
I joined Sheffield Hallam in September 2011 and I am currently the subject leader for foundation subjects. Prior to this appointment I worked with a range of schools across the city to develop professional development opportunities for teachers and increased opportunities for students to participate in school sport.
My commitment to supporting schools is also evident through my voluntary roles as chair of governors in a local special needs school, and chair of a local charitable sports trust.
Janet Goepel

Course leader BA (Honours) Teaching and Learning
My particular area of interest and expertise is in inclusion and special educational needs. I enjoy working with students to help them to form their own inclusive values and beliefs and consider how these can be developed into good classroom practice.
I am also interested in teacher professionalism and considering what this means in an ever changing political, social, legislative and economic climate. I am keen to develop my interest in how teachers become professional and in the development of a professional qualities approach.
Before entering higher education, I was a primary teacher and special educational needs co-ordinator. I had a special interest in working with professionals from other agencies including health and social services which was developed into the focus for doctoral research. This study includes the consideration of professionality and the qualities of being professional. I am keen to see how interprofessional working can become more effective.
I have published in research and professional journals and presented papers at many conferences both within the UK and internationally. This includes work within health as well as education.
I teach on a range of undergraduate courses, and I am course leader for the BA in Teaching and Learning which provides a route for teaching assistants to become teachers. I am also involved in post graduate work with in-service teachers working as special educational needs co-ordinators.
