Research Assessment Exercise (RAE)

Introduction

The Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) assesses the quality of research in universities and colleges in the UK, enabling the higher education funding bodies (such as the Higher Education Funding Council for England) to distribute public funds for research selectively on the basis of quality.

The RAE 2008 is the sixth exercise to assess the quality of UK research across all disciplines - known as units of assessment (UoA).

Panels of experts rated the quality of research submitted to each UoA by the University and a quality profile was produced detailing the percentage of work falling into a quality level on rising scale of

  • 1* (National)
  • 2* (International)
  • 3* (International excellence)
  • 4* (World leading)

The RAE 2008 results are positive, demonstrating that we have upheld our position as a research-active post-1992 university, and showing an ongoing commitment to expand our innovative portfolio of national and international research. We have continued to maintain our strength in a number of areas where we have been traditionally strong, and have been encouraged by the results in areas that we've submitted for the first time.

The University submitted both experienced and early career researchers to the RAE to obtain a true quality profile of our research - this gives potential students and research collaborators an excellent understanding of the breadth and quality of our research portfolio.
