Research and consultancy services

The Built Environment Research Group engages in scholarship and applied grant-funded research. This is targeted at underpinning learning and teaching, engaging with research communities worldwide and developing peer-reviewed published outputs.

Research income since 2001 has exceeded £1 million, with recent high profile research including

  • an EPSRC project examining design-build tendering, a paper from which attained the premier CIOB '2003-04 Research and Innovation Award' and 'CIOB Medal'
  • a HEFCE TCS project 'Development of Energy-Loss Techniques for Buildings'
  • a series of projects funded by RICS and industry partners through the Urban Land Use Research Club

High quality scholarship has led to numerous academic and research-based textbooks, peer-reviewed journals and international conference papers, including works acknowledged by the EPSRC and the Emerald Literati Club.

Recent academic consultancy has involved advanced training programmes for Henry Boot Plc, Bluestone and Professional Construction Skills (PCS) Sheffield, while research-based consultancy has been undertaken for Yorkshire Water and the NHS.
