Characterisation of bacteria by intact cell matrix assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry (ICM-MS)
Pioneering research on ICM-MS has led to the commercial development of a rapid method of identifying bacteria firstly by 'Waters / MicroMass and subsequently by Shimadzu / SARAMISTM database and Bruker Daltronics Ltd / Biotyper. These are now been installed in hospitals in GB and on the continent for the rapid identification of bacteria. These commercial systems are able to analyse 1000 isolates a day at a cost of less than £0.01 per sample. Ways of speeding up the identification of bacteria in clinical samples even further and other commercial applications of ICM-MS profiling and imaging are being pursued.
Substratum influences on the physiological activity of bacteria
Surface energy of a substratum can influence the assimilatory and respiratory activity of surface-associated bacteria as well as their degree of adhesion. The overall metabolic efficiency of surface-associated bacteria is greater than for their free-living counterparts. The degree of this metabolic efficiency is dependent on the substratum surface energy. Applications of this research include enhancement of biotechnological processes involving immobilised cells and the prevention of biofouling.
