Can GIST analysis be focused upon a single site?
Yes. The sample of web pages GIST processes can be constrained to only focus upon a particular type of site, folder and/or page type.
Does GIST have to run on the server?
No. GIST currently works as a client.
Why are thumbnails placed where they are are on the interactive map?
GIST computes the visual features of a design that distinguish the sample pages it has used and then positions thumbnails on the basis of two of those (one for the vertical position, and one for the horizontal position). GIST measures the visual similarity of web pages using the most relevant of a range of possible criteria, including the variety and intensity of the colours used as well as the shapes used on a page.
Can GIST work with dynamically generated sites?
Yes. GIST works with most dynamic web technology, and it can be set to submit data if a form is encountered.
What technology is used for GIST?
Currently the prototype GIST runs as a web client written in python. The interactive map is currently implemented in SVG.
Can you see what parts of the interactive map are from a specific site?
Yes. There is a filter tool on the map that can hide (or reveal) the thumbnails from a particular site, folder, and/or pages of a particular type.
Can GIST be used to find site errors?
Yes. Although GIST is not designed just for link-checking, it will often identify failed links or spurious pages and locate them in a distinctive area of the interactive map.
Can GIST help with assessing accessibility of a website?
No. GIST is designed primarily for those with an interest in maintaining the intended look and feel of a site, and as such provides little information about the site's adherence to accessibility guidelines.
How can GIST be used?
GIST is currently available through a site inspection consultancy service. Please contact either Chris Roast or Robert Evans (details below).
