John was Assistant Dean, Research and Development for the Faculty and a is the former Director of the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research. He is now Director of Special Projects based in the Faculty.
He has particular research experience in the field of parents and schools, the professional development of teachers, and social justice in relation to schools and was a member of the core team teaching the doctorate in education course.
He has directed a variety of funded projects: in partnership with the Office of National Statistics he co-directed the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) project looking at the experience of parents in choosing a secondary school and he has recently directed a follow up study with the National Centre for Social Research (NATCEN). He directed a research study into the training and operation of Admission Appeals Panels for the DfES.
In September 2003 he was invited to the Education and Skills Select Committee as an expert witness on admissions to secondary school. He has directed a number of projects on the professional development of teachers and the whole school workforce including the Testbed project for the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA). He co-directed an evaluation team for the Home Office Crime Reduction in Secondary Schools initiative.
John was a teacher and deputy head teacher for 13 years. He has experience of both qualitative and quantitative research and research management.
