Mike has a wide range of research experience, particularly in the areas of 14-19 education, school workforce development and careers and evaluation methodology, using qualitative, quantitative and combined methods. He has authored and co-authored over 50 research and evaluation reports and over 15 journal and conference papers.
Mike has been conducting, managing and directing research projects for government and other organisations for over 10 years. Mike currently co-directs the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) NQT Quality study, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DSCF) Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) Mapping Study, and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) Impact Study. Other recent projects include the national 14-19 Leadership and Management Development Programme Evaluation, two other studies for the DCSF, the After School Science and Engineering Clubs and Choice Advice evaluation, the TDA Testbed Research and Evaluation project, and the TDA/Lifelong Learning UK (LLUK) study of support staff roles in applied learning.
In the region, Mike recently directed the Yorkshire Futures Teacher Recruitment and Retention Study and the Yorkshire Forward evaluation of Rotherham Ready Enterprise Project and the evaluation of Transition Advisers in the Dearne Valley.
Mike's background is as a business studies and information technology teacher in comprehensive schools and he has extensive experience of work-related and vocational education and social inclusion projects. From October 2006 to November 2007 Mike was acting director of the Centre for Education and Inclusion Research, and he was confirmed as director in December 2007.
