Professor Ian Cole

Ian Cole is professor of housing studies and a principal research fellow in CRESR. He has extensive experience of research, teaching and writing in the field of housing and regeneration policy and practice. He has directed research projects for the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF), Housing Corporation, regional bodies, local authorities and housing associations.

Professor Cole has been appointed as special adviser to the three House of Commons Select Committee inquiries on the impact of regeneration, low housing demand, and the role of Housing Market Renewal Pathfinders. He recently chaired a Ministerial Advisory Panel on the future of regulation in the social housing sector. He is an academic advisor to the ECORYS Research Committee, based in the Netherlands.

Professor Cole is a member of the CLG Expert Panels on Housing and Community Analysis and on Regeneration and Economic Development. He has been a member of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Board of Examiners in Town Planning and of the JRF Housing and Neighbourhoods Committee.

Professor Cole is heading up the housing domain in the national evaluation of the New Deal for Communities (NDC) programme and leads the CRESR team that was part of the consortium undertaking the national evaluation of the Housing Market Renewal programme. He is currently directing a major three year qualitative research project on experiences of neighbourhood change in six areas of Britain, funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

  • housing market analysis
  • housing, regeneration and social mix
  • place-based and person-based approaches to tackling social and economic disadvantage
  • the development and future direction of the social housing sector in Britain
  • social cohesion and urban change in Britain
  • cross-national comparisons of area-based programmes
