Jan Gilbertson is a senior research fellow in the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research. She has an MA in Social Science Research Methods and has expertise in both quantitative and qualitative methods. She has considerable experience of both longitudinal survey work and qualitative interviewing.

Jan has contributed on many successful research applications and has undertaken research for a range of policy clients including the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Housing Corporation, the North West Regional Health Executivethe Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC), Communities and Local Government (CLG), the BIG Lottery and for various local authorities and Primary Care Trusts.

Jan has an urban regeneration background and her expertise centres on issues of health and well being in the urban environment, including the psychosocial determinants of health, fuel poverty, and the links between urban policy interventions, social capital and health issues. In recent years she has played a key role in developing and managing a number of large scale longitudinal projects which have examined the impact of housing investment programmes on the quality of life and well being of the tenants and residents involved. This work included a major role in the national health impact evaluation of the Government's Warm Front Scheme. With colleagues from London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and University College London Jan is currently involved in a project for the Department of Energy and Climate Change which is developing a model to quantify the health impacts of domestic energy efficiency measures.

Jan also has a track record of undertaking research on the impact of volunteering and was Principal Investigator of an ESRC project which examined methodological issues related to measuring participation at a local level. Recently, Jan has evaluated the impact of a volunteering programme in Doncaster which aimed to empower older people achieve a healthy lifestyle. She is currently involved in an evaluation of a financial capability project in Sheffield and a project which is assessing the impact of the voluntary and community sector in Derbyshire.
