Tony is a principal research fellow in CRESR. He has extensive experience of research and evaluation on urban and regional issues, and is an acknowledged expert on labour market policy and coalfields regeneration.
Research projects include assessments of area-based regeneration strategies and initiatives (e.g. South Yorkshire Objective 1, Enterprise Zones); evaluation of a range of labour market pilot programmes such as the Working Neighbourhoods and Jobseekers' Mandatory Activity and City Strategies; estimates of real unemployment in former industrial areas; and research on collaborative governance arrangements across local and regional boundaries.
Tony is a key member of the CRESR data analysis and policy team, helping to develop its capacity in utilising a wide range of official data sources and GIS techniques. This has included the provision of technical assistance to European Structural Fund programmes.

He is book reviews editor for 'People, Places, Policy - Online', and a member of the editorial board of 'Planning Practice and Research'. He also acts as referee and book reviewer for 'Urban Studies', 'European Planning Studies', 'Local Economy' and 'Evaluation'.
