CSE to attend the ASE annual conference 2012

The ASE annual conference will be held on Wednesday 4–Saturday 7 January 2012, and is billed as an inspiring event for science educators consisting of lectures, workshops and networking opportunities. We'll also be there with our stand, providing an opportunity for you to discuss your STEM based challenges, and see how we could help you and your school.

WiSET team launch 'HerStory

Our WiSET (Women in science, engineering and technology) group have launched a new online resource aimed at providing a one-stop-shop of information for women and girls interested in engineering. Through the use of film clips, visitors to the site can find out about different roles and routes to apprenticeships, careers and studies options.

This resource has been funded by the Royal Academy of Engineering and HESTEM. For further information visit www.wiset.org.uk.

Firth Rixon supports CSE

One of the events during this year's Global Manufacturing Week, which was held in Sheffield, was a celebration of Women in Enterprise held at the Cutler's Hall. Members of CSE's WiSET team attended the event and were delighted to hear Elinor Oldroyd, general manager at Firth Rixson Metals, telling the audience that her company welcomed requests for work experience placements.

Within a very short space of time a couple of placements had been agreed, and women from WiSET's Return to STEM course were able to access the valuable up-to-date experience and confidence boost that they so needed to help them return to the workplace.

Staff at Firth Rixson have been a wonderful source of support and inspiration to WiSET, recognising the value of developing a more diverse workforce, and understanding that this can only be achieved through a range of initiatives and activities. They were also happy to host a visit from our work experience student, Guneet Kohli, and to contribute to our HerStory web resource (see story above) where you can hear an interview with Deborah Rees, human resources manager.

International Year of Chemistry Breakfast: Focus on Women in Chemistry

2011 is the International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) and one of the themes is Marie Curie. In January, the Women in SET Team within the Centre for Science Education built on this opportunity to promote the role of women in chemistry.

A drop-in breakfast event was one of many taking place around the world on the same day, prior to the official launch of the campaign in Paris on 27 January.
