Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES)
The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science (CSES) boasts one of the largest physical activity and sport-related portfolios of research expertise in the UK, if not Europe. It has a wide range of clients from the public and private sector, and operates across two main disciplines
CSES began operations in autumn 2000 as the result of a £5 million investment by Sheffield Hallam University. Our vision and continuing aim is to be 'world class' in research, consultancy, training, and education.
Research income to the centre has risen steadily, from less than £100,000 in 2001 to over £1 million in 2006/7.
The development of research capability and research careers in CSES is a key consideration, with several active researchers being released from some of their teaching duties. Research capacity is developed through a system of staff mentoring, especially for newer researchers.
Research students and research studentships
Supervisory and academic support for PhD students in CSES accords with the precepts in the QAA Code of Practice section on Postgraduate Research Programmes. CSES has well-equipped space for doctoral students, with dedicated space for full-time students and hot-desk facilities for part-time students. Full-time research students have excellent opportunities to meet with other students and research staff at academic meetings such as the CSES seminar series. Students are also funded to attend/give papers at conferences.
The centre's facilities, equipment and staff are at the highest standard, and enable a multi-disciplinary team to deliver projects renowned for insight and innovation. Please contact us for further information.
