Facilities

The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science offers an impressive range of facilities and equipment, which operate at the cutting edge of sports science and sports engineering. These include

Biochemistry laboratory

The Centre offers impressive laboratory facilities for analysis and sampling.

Biomechanics laboratory

The Centre boasts one of the UK's largest and best-equipped biomechanics laboratories, featuring

  • an Eagle Digital eight camera online Motion Capture and Analysis System Motion Analysis Corporation complete with OrthoTrak and KinTrak data processing software. The system is wall-mounted in the laboratory and fully synchronised for use with force platforms and EMG equipment
  • three Kistler floor-mounted force platforms, a portable Kistler force platform and a Kistler Gaitway force measuring treadmill
  • an eight channel MIE telemetered EMG system
  • two RSscan pressure plates and a series of pressure measuring insoles
  • two Redlake Imaging Motion Scope high speed video cameras capable of filming at up to 2000 frames per second
  • the latest digital movement data analysis and display software
    • Filmbox and 3D Studio Maxanimation software
    • SIMM musculoskeletal modelling software
    • SIMI and Dartfish video data processing software
  • 1,500 Lux lighting and complete black-out facilities
  • Matlab and LabView software for developing custom data collection and analysis protocols for specialist projects

Computer rooms and video analysis

The Centre is equipped with more than 150 computers running the latest software packages for complex data and video analysis.

Environmental chamber

The British Olympic Association (BOA) approved chamber simulates the climate of almost any country in the world, allowing athletes and other individuals to experience adverse conditions and then acclimatise. Temperatures can reach 40 degrees celsius above and 20 degrees celsius below zero, with humidity anywhere between one and 99 per cent.

The chamber can be used to

  • test clothing tolerance under different climatic conditions
  • study the effects of enduring extreme environments on sports people
  • look at the effects of temperature on work-related tasks in the occupational setting
  • physiology laboratories

Isokinetic dynamometry

The Centre offers impressive equipment for measuring muscle strength and analysing major muscle groups. Muscle movements are monitored and controlled ensuring consistent, safe rehabilitation for injuries.

Physiology laboratories

Our three physiology laboratories are designed to assess how the human body responds and adapts to sport and exercise. They are fully equipped with a wide range of facilities to allow individuals to be assessed using the most appropriate sport-specific methods. The equipment available for testing includes

  • Medgraphics CPX/D and Cosmed K4b2 - on-line gas analysis systems enabling data to be collected both in the laboratory and out in the field.
  • YSI 1500 Sport for blood lactate analysis both in the laboratory and out in the field.
  • HP Cosmos Saturn - oversized treadmill capable of reaching a speed of 40km per hour and a gradient of 25 per cent, designed to be used by wheelchair athletes or cyclists. Additionally, a smaller 'HP Cosmos Pulsar' is also available for running.
  • SRM power cranks and an electronically braked cycle ergometer for the testing of cyclists.
  • Concept 2b rowing ergometer and DYNO are also available for sport specific testing

Psychology laboratories

The Centre has two spacious psychology laboratories alongside three additional data collection cubicles. Each cubicle is monitored by a camera for assessment and set in a pleasant, comfortable environment to encourage relaxation.

Sports engineering facilities

Our facilities and specialist equipment include

  • high-speed video motion capture and analysis (two x Phantom v4.3)
  • CFD workstations (Fluent solver, Ensight post-processing)
  • High Performance Computing cluster
  • Computer Aided Engineering (Pro/E, LS Dyna, Geomagic Studio, Rhino)
  • 3D non-contact laser scanning (Metris ModelMaker)

We also have a well-equipped workshop that includes

  • V390 Lathe
  • Milling Machine
  • Ajax AJVB400 Vertical Bandsaw and Excel PBS180EE Horizontal bandsaw
  • Triton PowerSinus TIG Welderand Saturn 251KGE MIG Welder
  • Bench Grinder and Linnisher

We can also draw on the extensive range of additional workshop and machining facilities within the School of Engineering at the University's city campus.
