School workshops
The Centre for Sport and Exercise Science offer educational workshops which allow students access to state-of-the-art equipment and expertise and offer a hands-on approach to compliment student's theoretical knowledge with practical awareness.
- sessions are fully flexible and can be offered to students studying GCSEs, A levels or NVQs, as well as younger children at junior and secondary school
- Centre for Sport and Exercise Science manuals and worksheets are available for students to complete during their visit, which can then form the basis of coursework when they return to school or college
- for those students studying A level PE, these sessions will give them a valuable insight into what it is like to study sport science at degree level
- students can gain an insight into the sport science support which might be provided to elite and developing athletes in their build-up to the London Olympic Games in 2012
A typical package could include
- A full tour of the Centre for Sport and Exercise Science research laboratories and facilities
- An advanced sport performance testing demonstration. In the state-of-the-art physiology labs, students would be involved in laboratory-testing of aerobic capacity (VO2 max) using on-line gas analysis, along with practical field-based sport performance testing of speed and agility, muscular strength and endurance, upper and lower body power, reaction times, and flexibility
- Practical biomechanical sessions - students will be involved in analysing a football kick or tennis serve, and testing forces and foot pressures
- Sport psychology workshops - tudents would be introduced to core mental skills training, goal setting, anxiety management, imagery and concentration skills
- Sports nutrition - students would be introduced to topics such as healthy balanced eating, eating to compete, and the importance of fluids
