Research interests/current work

Stuart's major research focus is the psychosocial effects of obesity and factors that influence exercise participation. His current research examines the portrayal of obesity in the media, anti-fat attitude intervention, factors that influence on body shape discrepancies and the effects of exercise environments.

Profile

Stuart joined Sheffield Hallam University in September 2011 from Aberystwyth University, where he studied for a PhD examining the social perceptions of obesity. As part of this research, Stuart examined implicit and explicit attitudes towards obesity, the portrayal of obesity in the media, the effect of media portrayal of obesity on self and other perception and counter conditioning as intervention to modify anti-fat attitudes.

He is currently a member of the British Psychological Society Obesity Working Group and recently contributed to a report sent to the House of Lords, with the aim of increasing the provision of psychology in the treatment and management of obesity. He has also been an active member of the British Psychological Society, British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences and Psychology Postgraduate Affairs Group, having sat on a number of committees and contributed to the organisation of a number of conferences.
