The Future of Charity Accounting: SORP, GAAP and IFRS
Tuesday 12 January 2010
10.45am-4pm, plus reception
City Campus, Sheffield
Charity accounting is due to change radically in the next few years through the convergence of UK GAAP (UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards). With the Accounting Standards Board having issued a major consultation paper, this will undoubtedly mean a major change to the framework of the Charities SORP*.
This one-day conference brings together top speakers who are leading on this issue, and practitioners and researchers involved in charity accounting, to discuss the huge implications for public benefit entities across the UK.
Organised by our Centre for Voluntary Sector Research, the event will be of particular interest to small to medium sized charities subject to the Charities SORP regime, primarily those with incomes between £250,000 and £5 million.
The conference assumes some experience of financial reporting and reasonable understanding of the Charities SORP 2005, but no prior knowledge of IFRS.

Centre for Voluntary Sector Research 10th Anniversary Lecture
'Does a strong and independent third sector mean a healthy civil society?'
Thursday 23 October 2008
With guest speaker Stuart Etherington - Chief Executive of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations
Stuart Etherington, Chief Executive of NCVO, delivered the 10th Anniversary Lecture of the Centre for Voluntary Sector Research on 23 October 2008.
Responding to the topic 'Does a strong and independent third sector mean a healthy civil society?', he argued that rather than being the measure of health for a civil society, a strong and independent third sector was in fact an fundamental ingredient of such a society.
Much of his lecture addressed the current financial crisis. He said, 'The credit crunch is having a huge impact, not only on the economy or across government, but throughout civil society. This demonstrates that these risks were not borne solely by City traders, but by all of us. Therefore we need to find solutions that work across this broader landscape - a tripartite deal encompassing the state, market and civil society.'
He pointed out that those financial institutions which have maintained mutual structures and which have not indulged in high risk instruments are now seen as the strongest.

'Their approach continues to set the standard across this sector, and I'm proud to have been invited to help mark the event.'
'The Spirit of Charity' professorial lecture

Introduced by Professor Christine Booth, the lecture was delivered to around 150 people in the week when England and Wales saw the largest changes to charity law for 400 years as a result of may new provisions taking effect under the Charities Act 2006.
