About the network
Education research at Sheffield Hallam University focuses on contemporary issues with a strong commitment to impact in the shaping of the educational experience of learners in all sectors. The dominant context is the state system of education in England and research is conducted into policy and practice, at both the macro and micro level.
There is a sharp focus on social inclusion and equity, and with a range of perspectives and methodologies being used to interrogate the key questions.
There are currently three main areas of enquiry
- education policy research - carrying through the social inclusion agenda
- higher education research - enabling wider participation
- curriculum research - understanding learners' experience of mathematics, language and literacy
Within each of these three areas of enquiry, there are strong sub-themes. Methodological and theoretical approaches vary, ranging from large scale statistical enquiry through conventional qualitative approaches to exploratory methodologies, including those associated with narrative and with new forms of communication.
