Mathematics education research

Mathematics education research is co-ordinated through the Mathematics Education Centre and has as a central focus the socio-political analysis of contemporary experiences of teaching and learning mathematics. Within this, there are key contributions about authority/authorship, social justice, the student experience in higher education and innovative methodologies. Much of this work is situated in the context of the initial and continuing professional development of teachers. The Mathematics Education Research and Scholarship Group (MERSG) runs an internal reading group and regular seminars with internal and external contributions.

The focus for commissioned contract research has also been the initial and continuing education of mathematics teachers. The research is close to practice and practitioners, supporting the development of policy by the bodies concerned. Recent projects have included the evaluation of online and e-learning and collaborative professional development.

Co-ordinator Tansy Hardy, and current members include Corinne Angier, Dr Hannah Bartholomew, Dr Mark Boylan, Max Caley, Dr Mark Dabbs, Colin Jackson, Sue Elliott, Harry Grainger, Keith Marsden, Dr Declan O'Reilly; Professor Hilary Povey, Sue Slater, Peter Smith and Jo Tomalin.
