Research activities

The key areas of research pursued in each area are described below, together with research group membership. A number of members of staff belong to more than one research group and there is interaction and cross-fertilisation between groups and across the three disciplines, as follows.

English

English has five research groups - renaissance, writing, gender and culture 1700-1900, modern and contemporary, creative writing, and language.

There is, in addition, an overarching Digital Humanities Research Group, with a membership spanning all the other research groups.

History

History has two main research groups in imperial history and in business and economic history, as well as significant groups of researchers in modern European history, ethnicity and culture, women and gender, and popular politics in Britain.

Film

Film has three main research groups - British cinema, American cinema, and contemporary film theory, though there is also emerging work in Eastern European and East Asian cinemas, and in adaptation studies.

Work in the area is strongly based in historical, contextual, and cultural approaches, while drawing also on director, text and genre studies.
