MA Social Research Methods for Social Work (SSRM)

Our MA in Social Research Methods for Social Work (SSRM) provides an ESRC-recognised training route for people already involved in the profession and who are seeking a vocationally relevant qualification for research-oriented work.

Research degrees

Research degrees leading to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil) awards are offered in areas related to our current research themes, which include

  • rehabilitation and recovery
  • ageing and older people
  • children, young people and families
  • hard to reach groups and social inclusion
  • culture identity and health
  • inter-professional and multidisciplinary education and working

The PhD may be taken on a split-site basis, which allows international students to undertake some of their studies in their own country along with periods of time spent in Sheffield. Availability of the split PhD is subject to satisfactory supervisory and research governance arrangements

Professional Doctorate

We also offer a Professional Doctorate (DProf), which allows experienced professionals to study as part of a diverse cohort of other mature professionals and undertake projects addressing the real challenges and dilemmas of professional practice. It is a practice-based alternative to the more theoretical PhD and is ideal for those working in, or wishing to work in, advanced practitioner or consultant roles.
