A senior research fellow in the Centre, Dr Alex McClimens joined Sheffield Hallam in September 2006 from the University of Sheffield where he was a lecturer in the Department of Mental Health and Learning Disability. He qualified R.N.M.H. from Edinburgh in 1986. He received his BA (First Class Hons.) from Sheffield Hallam University in 1992 and his PhD from the University of Sheffield in 2004.
Alex worked in practice with individuals labeled with learning disability in a variety of residential care settings across Sheffield between 1987 and 2004.
His research interests cluster around the collaborative research paradigm and associated methodologies. He has formed partnerships with local self-advocacy groups as well as with 'Words and Actions', a theatre/drama collective comprising individuals with variety of impairment/disability. Working with these collaborators he has delivered conference presentations and contributes regular material to the RCN journal Learning Disability Practice.
He is currently working with colleagues in the Centre for Professional and Organisation Development (CPOD) and at Speakup on a funded project to examine how local government officials deal with people with learning disabilities in routine day to day practice.
