Cathy Hill is programme leader of the Professional Doctorate and academic delivery manager with responsibility for the MRes (Health and Society). She is currently on secondment with the Centre from her role as principal lecturer in the Centre for Professional and Organisation Development.
Before taking up her post at Sheffield Hallam University in 2002, Cathy had a varied career as, successively and sometimes simultaneously, an art therapist, psychotherapist, counselling psychologist and organisational psychologist.
She is a member of the British Association of Art Therapists and is a Chartered member and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, as well as having membership of the Health Professions Council and being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Teaching interests
Since entering academia Cathy's main interest has been in the education of advanced professional health and social care practitioners
- Since 2006 Cathy has led the Professional Doctorate programme
- From 2005-2009 she led the MSc Health and Social Care Leadership
- Extensive MSc research methods and other teaching
- Supervision of MSc and doctoral students
- Cathy is the academic delivery manager for the Centre for Health and Social Care Research and advises on all accredited educational provision by the Centre
Cathy is active in developing the scope and definition of research and enquiry in the context of practice. She has a particular interest in enquiry which occurs in and for advanced level practice and which has effective action rather than published output as its main aim.
Research interests
Cathy's broader research and consultancy interests have focused on individual and organisational stress, counselling and mentoring, and emotional work.
She regularly develops and delivers bespoke leadership and professional effectiveness programmes for local NHS and Social Care organisations.
Recent work has also included development of mentoring skills within the Expert Patient programme.
