Dr Jill Aylott is a senior lecturer and research lead at the Centre for Professional and Organisation Development in the Faculty of Health and Wellbeing. Dr Aylott joined the university in 2004 after an extensive career as a practitioner and senior manager in learning disability services and obtaining a PhD in autism/Asperger syndrome in 2003.

Jill has been active within the nursing profession being a member of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN). Her work with people with profound multiple disabilities led her to advocate for the development of practitioner guidance in the area of sex and sexuality for nurses (RCN congress presentation, 2000).

Continued involvement with service users throughout her career led to the development of creative and innovative methodologies to engage young people with complex communication needs in her PhD research. Jill's research expertise is in the area of participatory research methods and utilising a range of qualitative methods to achieve this.

Drawing upon management and organisation experience in the health and social care sector for learning disability, Jill project-managed the development of a joint BA (Hons) degree in nursing and social work (learning disability), the course took its first students September 2006.

Current research involves working collaboratively with other researchers to develop capacity of local people to train as co-researchers for an evaluation project, and consultation with a range of stakeholders and service users in the social care sector on the development of Induction Standards for Managers.

Jill has published extensively and is currently on the editorial board for the British Journal of Nursing.
