Kate Gerrish is research professor in nursing in the Centre of Health and Social Care Research. Her post is jointly funded with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust where she contributes at a strategic level to the development of nursing research and evidence-based practice.
Kate graduated with a Bachelor of Nursing / RN from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1977. She subsequently gained a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Manchester and a PhD from the University of Nottingham. During a career spanning 30 years, Kate has held a variety of clinical nursing and midwifery posts in community and hospital settings in the UK and Zambia and she has extensive experience teaching in under-graduate and graduate nurse education
Kate has a longstanding research interest in the area of knowledge translation with a focus on the implementation and evaluation of strategies to promote evidence-based practice. She is currently leading a five year £2 million programme of knowledge translation and implementation research as part of the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Research and Care (CLAHRC) for South Yorkshire and is Implementation Lead for the NIHR CLAHRC SY which is taking forward a £20 million, five year programme of applied research and implementation of research findings in the area of long-term conditions. She has also undertaken research in the area of nursing development. Research spanning both primary and secondary care sectors has focused on policy issues associated with innovative approaches to nursing organisation and the implementation and evaluation of new role developments. She is currently principal investigator for a two year project funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing examining approaches to assessing the impact of nurse consultant roles.
Kate's other research interests are the area of transcultural nursing, most notably in the experiences and perspectives of different ethnic groups in relation to their access to and passage through health services and the nurse's role in supporting these groups, in understanding cultural conflicts that can arise, the cultural congruence of services and how these affect the performance of nurses. She has recently completed a collaborative project with Age Concern examining the experiences of growing older in the African Caribbean community. She is currently principal investigator for a study examining socio-cultural influences on TB prevention and management within the Somali community. In 2005 she was appointed adjunct professor in Transcultural Nursing at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden and is working on a related programme of research in Sweden.
Kate has published widely in her field and has presented papers at national and international conferences. She has recently co-edited the 6th edition of The Research Process in Nursing, a seminal research text for nursing. She served for seven years as a joint editor to the international journal Ethnicity and Health and is a member of the editorial board of four scientific journals. In 2003 Kate was elected as chair of the Research Society of the Royal College of Nursing of the United Kingdom. Kate also holds an honorary Chair and the School of Health and Related Research, University of Sheffield.

Kate's primary methodological expertise is in qualitative approaches, although she does has experience of a broader range of methodological approaches.
