Law research at Sheffield Hallam

The law department at Sheffield Hallam University is committed to producing high quality, socio-legal research that is disseminated through leading refereed journals, books and reports. The focus on socio-legal studies means that much of the department's research is concerned with examining the operation of the law within institutions and wider society. In addition, our research utilises understandings from other disciplines such as psychology, sociology and criminology.

We also engage in empirical research studies that assist our understanding of the operation of the law in practice. This research has influenced wider academic debates and policy discussions in areas including employment law, regulation of public services, consent to medical treatment and legal education.

Law staff are also involved in conference-related activities, including the organisation of conference streams, in addition to consultancy activities with the legal profession and wider professional community.

The department comprises staff with national, and in some instances, international reputations in areas of research including: International law and human rights, tort law, medical law and ethics and criminal justice.
