Research and consultancy services
Many members of the law department have been involved in consultancy work and commissioned research, along with conference and seminar presentations. Research expertise in law is frequently recognised externally, and is based upon original empirical research findings, detailed doctrinal research, and work that draws upon social science literature.
Consultancy and continuing professional development (CPD) activities provided by members of the law department include
- Dr Rob Heywood and Seamus Burns are involved in extensive ongoing consultancy and training activities with local NHS trusts which draw upon their expertise in the fields of medical law and ethics.
- In association with Veritas Management, Phil Rumney has been invited to run seminars for forensic medical examiners on male rape. He has also been invited to give papers concerning male rape for the Royal Society of Medicine (2003, 2005, 2007). Phil currently sits as an expert group member, as part of the Department of Health and National Institute for Mental Health in England's 'Victims of Violence and Abuse Prevention Programme'.
- Dr Katy Ferris was recently invited to discuss her research on social service complaints mechanisms with the Department of Health and the Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI). She was also the keynote speaker at the JC Associates Conference on Complaint Review Panels - 'Good Practice Guidance', 23 October 2006, Nottingham.
