Profile

Richard joined the Law Group in 2007. He is the creator of LawSync™, an innovative project and training module exploring the rapidly changing market dynamics in the context of legal services.

Prior to joining the Law Group, Richard was a Jean Monnet Lecturer in EU Law at the University of Leeds. His principal research interest is in EU disability law and policy. Between 1998 and 1999 he represented the Disability Unit of the EU Commission in the development of what is now Directive 2000/78/EC (the Employment Framework Directive). Since 2003, Richard has been a registered expert on the EU Commission’s DG Employment and Social Affairs AMI-INT Expert database (registration number: 20030225-0560).

Richard is a regular speaker on disability equality and human rights law at the Academy of European Law (ERA) in Trier, Germany. In conjunction with ERA, Richard is contributing to the European Union's Programme for Employment and Social Solidarity - PROGRESS (2007-2013). In this capacity, Richard's research is currently focused on the legal and policy impact at national and EU-levels of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2006.

Richard is an expert advisor to the British Disability Rights Commission (subsumed within the Equality and Human Rights Commission in 2010) and the European Disability Forum. He has acted as a consultant for various groups, institutional bodies and major private companies in and out of Europe and is a regular contributor to academic journals and symposia at national and international levels. Having established Disability Law Consultancy, Richard has has been advising Manchester United Ltd (MU) on a consultancy basis since 2010 in respect of its compliance with equality legislation. One element of this involved undertaking a review of its practices and procedures in respect of disabled supporters and compiling a report for submission to senior management.
