George has been employed at the Materials and Engineering Research Institute, Sheffield Hallam University since 2005. Currently, he works within the Centre for Automation and Robotics Research (MMVL group) and was a visiting researcher at D-CIS Lab of Thales Research and Technology (Delft, NL).
He is a systems engineer with postgraduate and doctoral studies in Pattern Recognition. His expertise is on hardware / software robotics middle-ware, sensor calibration and fusion, particularly laser based instrumentation and machine perception. He also has working experience in interpreted languages and the application of statistical methodology (e.g. in robot localisation, systems reliability).
His work has been performed as part of research projects funded by the EPSRC and European Union ICT FP6 and FP7 projects. He has also collaborated with a number of industrial organisations, some of which were on small-scale consultancy works, in the field of real-time systems. For example, with Visible Sounds (Wales, 1999; embedded speech recognition), Cell Analysis (England, 2005; bacteria recognition), JMAR (US, 2006; micro-particle laser scattering) and Merlin360 (England, 2009; ultra-sound localisation).
He is a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET, UK), the EU Cognition II network, and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS, UK). He is a reviewer for IEEE conferences and Institute of Physics journals.
