Dr Lyuba Alboul joined Sheffield Hallam in 2002. She has an MSc in Pure and Applied Mathematics, and PhD in Geometry and Topology (both from Moscow University 'RUDN'). Her PhD research was dedicated to the theory of Riemannian spaces. Even though her graduate and postgraduate studies were in the realm of pure mathematics, Lyuba has always been interested in theoretical computer science and AI.
She was awarded several research grants in Italy (University of Genova and Institute of Applied Mathematics) where she got an extensive training and experience in theoretical computer science. In Italy she got also the opportunity to perform research concerning the use of geometric methods in problems arisen in applications, which became the basis of her present research interests.
Her main research interest can shortly be characterised as ‘interplay between discrete and continuous mathematical structures’. The research credo is to develop a well founded and self-contained theory of geometric models, especially surfaces, originating from complex three-dimensional data. Her other research interest lies in Robotics where she is interested in emerging behaviour patterns in robot teams.
Lyuba participates in the following EU projects

In these projects she undertakes research in robot swarm control and map building.
Dr Alboul was the designer, key researcher and co-investigator of several successful projects in Russia, Italy, the Netherlands, and the UK.
She has published over 60 scientific papers in academic and professional journals and refereed conference proceedings.
At present she supervises two PhD students - Willie Brink and Gilberto Echeverria.
